Support the Bank Street Children's Book Committee

Children's Book Committee

More than 100 years old, the Bank Street Children's Book Committee had its roots in the Child Study Association of America, founded in 1909. The Committee is an all-volunteer organization that relies on the "expert" opinions of its members. They include psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and educators.

Best Children’s Books of the Year lists
The Committee evaluates current literature for children, and prepares and publishes booklists to guide parents, librarians, and teachers. The focus is on the selection of developmentally appropriate reading materials, and the Committee's Best Children’s Books of the Year lists include only positive reviews and recommendations and are available on the Website.

Young Reviewers Program
The Committee is unique in its consideration of reviews by young readers. Committee members send out books to the target age range for many of the books under consideration and highlight children's feedback in the "Pick of the Month," featured on the Web page, and also in its deliberations of annual award contenders.

Annual Awards
In 1942, the Committee established an annual award to encourage the writing and publishing of books "for children and young people dealing realistically with some of the problems in the world." The Committee also bestows an annual award for the best poetry book for young readers as well as an award for a nonfiction book that "serves as an inspiration for young readers."
