The Bank Street College of Education Center for Children's Literature is delighted to announce the establishment of the Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence.

Bank Street College of Education is establishing an endowment to support the Center for Children's Literature's annual Writer-in-Residence, in memory of Dorothy Carter and her life's work. Each year, a prominent author will be invited to work with students in the School for Children to craft their writing. Please join us in establishing this important resource for writers by giving to the endowment.

Establishment of a named endowed fund at Bank Street College requires a minimum of $50,000. We have received a wonderful lead gift of $25,000 and have been promised $20,000 more.  This challenges Dorothy's many friends and admirers to help us raise the remaining $5,000.

Kwame Alexander, winner of the 2015 Newbery Medal for The Crossover, was the inaugural Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence. He worked with the 9s/10s on their poetry curriculum in the spring of 2015.

Adam Gidwitz, 2016 Newbery Honor Medal winner for An Inquisitors Tale: Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog, was our second Dorothy Carter Writer-in -Residence.  He worked with the 9s/10s, on novel writing in 2016.

Kat Yeh, Crystal Kite Award Winner 2016 and best selling author of The Truth About Twinkie Pie, will be the third Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence.  She will work with the 9s/10s on creative writing from April 5 - 12th.

Dorothy Carter was a children's book author, a Broadway actress, the first African-American member of the Bank Street College graduate faculty, the first receipient of the Lucy Sprague Mitchell Award, and a leader of the Bank Street Writer's Lab.  We lost Dr. Carter in 2012 but her legacy will live on through the Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence program.
